I don’t know about you, but I find trying to keep my house tidy while running around after four little people to be quite a challenge (to say the least). I’d love to have the spare funds to hire some help in the cleaning department, but alas, I do not. But I have worked out how to keep a clean home as a SAHM (stay at home mom), it’s usually messy because well, I have four children, but it is clean.
Why I wanted a cleaning routine
Before creating my cleaning routine, I always felt overwhelmed by my house, and struggled to keep it clean. I couldn’t remember what I had cleaned, and when. And James would have to ask me if XYZ had been done recently, so I wanted something we could both see and refer to.
This routine took me a few months to establish, as moving into our new home, and welcoming baby girl #4 meant I now had more house to clean, and less time to do so haha.I also wanted something that would stick, which meant trying different things over a couple of months until I found something that would work around my days. I still have days where I don’t get things checked off, because life happens. But for the most part, I have been able to stick to this routine.
During my process of creating a routine, I realized that my previous problem was that I tried to do too much each day, and therefore wound up puttin off cleaning. Over the summer I started listening to The Mother Like a Boss podcast, and it’s helped my mindset SO much. I’ve yet to actually jump onto any of Kendra’s training sessions (hopefully I will soon). But her mantra of not having to do everything at once, has been a game changer for me. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your house, life, whatever, I definitely recommend checking her out!
My cleaning routine
Below is my daily cleaning schedule. I try not to plan much over the weekend, as we tend to be busy doing family things so I find it unrealistic to expect we’ll get lots of cleaning done. However, there are a few things that I rotate through, so the windows, fridge, and microwave only get cleaned every three weeks.
I’m not going to lie to you, my house could definitely be more clean. I’m sure there are people out there that would shudder at the things I don’t clean; heck in an ideal world I’d clean more too. But this is what works for me in this season of life, and that’s okay. It’s also worth noting that sometimes we will get some deep cleaning done if we’re both home, and have no plans, so things that get neglected in the day-to-day of life, like vacuuming the basement, or wiping down all the kitchen cabinets, get seen to eventually.
My favorite thing about this schedule is that each task for the day is relatively quick, so if we have a day where something unexpected comes up I/we can catch up the next day.
Other things I do to keep a clean home as a SAHM
In addition to my schedule I also have certain things I try to do routinely throughout the day. These are:
- Wipe the kitchen, table, and highchair down after each meal.
- Put cups and dishes in the dishwasher rather than dump them in the sink.
- Vacuum under the table after meals.
- Have tidy up times with the kids, these are usually before lunch, and before bed.
My girls also get involved with helping me keep the house clean/tidy. They unload the dishwasher together each morning, and have their own responsibilities to take a couple things off my plate. Emma does things such as vacuuming upstairs, dusting the shelves, and leaf blowing. Whereas Aubrey does things with my assistance, such as watering plants, that while aren’t quicker for me now as I teach her, will be when she’s able to do them solo.
I hope this helps you to keep your home a little cleaner, and more managable! If you have any tips for me, please leave them below.
